Re-pointing
Re-pointing is the process of renewing the pointing, which is the external part of mortar joints, in masonry construction. Over time weathering and decay cause voids in the joints between masonry units, usually in bricks, allowing water ingress.

During rainfall, porous substrates absorb water that can sit within the capillaries in the brick and stone for a long time. When freeze and thaw conditions exist the absorbed water will freeze causing cracking and general damage to the substrate. As the cycle repeats itself the cracking and damage can worsen causing structural problems in the future. Water ingress is the most common factor causing damage to old properties.
